AAC Week 8 – Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, October 22, 2026 · 7:30 PM ET

GAME OVERVIEW

Something has to give in Memphis tonight. The Memphis Tigers (5-2, 2-1 AAC) welcome the East Carolina Pirates (3-3, 1-1 AAC) to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and both teams arrive hungry to bounce back from disappointing losses. Memphis coughed up six turnovers in a baffling defeat at Tulane, while ECU fell 30-17 in overtime at UAB after a crushing late pick-six sealed their fate . The Pirates have actually won the last three meetings in this series including a 31-27 thriller last season, so Memphis carries extra motivation to defend its home turf .

OFFENSIVE BREAKDOWN

EAST CAROLINA PIRATES
The Pirates have been searching for consistency at quarterback, rotating between Emory Williams and Mitch Griffis without establishing a clear hierarchy . Still, the offense has weapons. Running back TJ Engleman Jr. is a legitimate playmaker — he’s averaging nearly 7 yards per carry and gives ECU a physical, between-the-tackles identity . Wide receiver Chase Sowell remains their most reliable deep threat, capable of taking the top off any defense.

ECU’s biggest issue: sustaining drives. They rank poorly in adjusted offensive efficiency, meaning they need big plays rather than methodical marches to score. Defensively, they’re actually solid against the pass — yielding just 187.5 yards per game through the air — but they’ve struggled to stop the run, surrendering nearly 173 rushing yards per contest . That’s a terrifying matchup against a Memphis team that wants to pound the ball.

MEMPHIS TIGERS
When you look at the stats, Memphis should be rolling. Quarterback Marcus Stokes threw for over 300 yards against Tulane — but he also tossed three interceptions after going turnover-free in his previous three games . The Tigers’ 1-2 rushing punch of Jaylin Carter and Manny Covey is one of the best in the conference — physical, shifty, and productive . Receiver Stonka Burnside broke out with seven catches for 151 yards and a TD against Tulane, proving he can be a dominant No. 1 target.

The problem is discipline. Those six giveaways at Tulane? That’s uncharacteristic and unsustainable. Memphis is simply too talented to lose that way, and you have to believe they’ve spent every practice rep this week protecting the football.

INJURY & KEY STATUS CHECK

– ECU: Starting defensive end Julian Ferguson remains sidelined with a knee injury — a significant loss against a run-heavy attack. Starting CB Julien Davis is probable after sitting out one game with a minor lower-body issue.

– Memphis: Offensive lineman DeAndre Brinson is listed as questionable but expected to play. Wideout Demeer Blankumsee is fully cleared after a midweek illness scare — Stokes needs all his weapons available.

THE MATCHUP THAT MATTERS

ECU’s run defense vs Memphis’ rushing attack. If Memphis controls the line of scrimmage and they should at home, they shorten the game, protect the ball, and keep their defense fresh. But if ECU can force Stokes into obvious passing situations where their solid secondary can make plays, this stays uncomfortably close for the Tigers.

The spread opened at Memphis -10.5, and the model actually favors Memphis by roughly 13 points, suggesting some line value on the home side but only if they fix the ball security. The total sits around 53.5–54.5 points.

BETTING ANALYSIS & PREDICTION

Line: Memphis -10.5 | Total: 54.5
Projected Score: Memphis 33 – ECU 24

I’m expecting Memphis to come out furious at home after that Tulane debacle. They have too much firepower on both sides, and ECU just doesn’t score enough to keep pace in a shootout unless the Tigers beat themselves again. Turnovers are the wild card here. If Memphis protects the ball, they win comfortably. If they don’t, it’s a dogfight.

My Picks: Over 54.5 Points | Memphis covers but watch out, don’t parlay heavy on the spread

Best Value Play: Stonka Burnside Over 72.5 Receiving Yards, he’s clearly Stokes’ go-to target right now, and ECU will have to throw numbers at the run game, leaving single coverage on the outside.

Final Thought: Can Memphis go three straight games without a giveaway? If yes, they win by 14+. If no, ECU steals another one in this series.
