ACC Week 8 — Scott Stadium, October 23, 2026 · 7:00 PM ET

GAME OVERVIEW

It’s a rematch with serious ACC title implications, exactly one year after Duke beat Virginia 27-20 in overtime in the 2025 ACC Championship Game . Tonight, the Virginia Cavaliers (4-3, 2-2 ACC) welcome the Duke Blue Devils (4-2, 1-2 ACC) back to Scott Stadium, and both programs are desperate for a signature conference win. Virginia has dropped two of three, most recently a 23-13 defeat at SMU while Duke has lost two straight by a combined 7 points, last-minute heartbreakers against Georgia Tech and North Carolina . The margins are razor-thin in this one.

OFFENSIVE BREAKDOWN

DUKE BLUE DEVILS
Duke doesn’t turn the ball over, they’ve surrendered only two sacks all season and protect the football as well as anyone in the country . Running back Nate Sheppard is their heartbeat, 820 rushing yards, 259 receiving yards, and 12 total touchdowns . He does it all tough inside runs, screen plays, and wheel routes down the sideline. QB Walker Eget spreads the ball efficiently to receivers Jordan Moore and Jalon Calhoun, but Sheppard dictates the rhythm of this entire offense.

Defensively, Duke is stout against the run, allowing just 107.6 rushing yards per game. They control the clock (33+ minutes possession per game) and force opponents into obvious passing downs where their secondary can make plays .

VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
Virginia mirrors Duke’s balanced approach, they want to run first with tailback Kobe Pace, who needs 20+ touches to keep the chains moving. QB Tony Muskett is a game manager, efficient, accurate, but not someone who’ll win a game on his own. His top target, Malachi Fields, is one of the ACC’s most underrated receivers, excellent body control and catch radius in the red zone.

The difference for Virginia is home-field advantage at Scott Stadium on a Friday night under the lights. The Cavaliers haven’t lost back-to-back games since late 2024, they respond well to adversity .

INJURY REPORT

– Duke: Starting safety Andrew Pellicciotta is OUT with an injury suffered vs UNC a significant loss in the secondary against Virginia’s tight end-heavy attack .
– Virginia: No major injuries reported, both starting offensive tackles are active; Muskett is fully cleared after a minor ankle issue.

THE KEY BATTLE – DUKE’S RUN DEFENSE vs VIRGINIA’S GROUND GAME

Virginia wins when Pace rushes for 90+ yards. Duke wins when they hold an opponent under 120 rushing yards. Something has to give. If Virginia can’t run effectively, Muskett becomes one-dimensional and without a truly elite deep threat, the Cavaliers struggle to come from behind against a disciplined defense like Duke’s.

On the other side: Duke’s passing game is good, but it’s not great. If Virginia stacks the box and forces Eget to beat them through the air, they can hang around which is exactly what they need at home.

BETTING ANALYSIS & PREDICTION

Line: Virginia -1.5 | Total: 47.5
Projected Score: Duke 24 – Virginia 23

The market has Virginia as a slight home favorite, but the underlying numbers favor Duke especially against the run and in turnover differential . Duke has played four one-score games; they just haven’t finished drives late. That regression is due. Virginia is 4-3 ATS but has struggled to move the ball consistently against physical defenses.

My Picks: Duke +1.5 | Under 47.5 Points
Best Value Play: Nate Sheppard Over 96.5 Total Yards — he touches the ball 25+ times in every close game, and this one will be tight throughout. He’s the most reliable player on the field.

Final Thought: Last year’s ACC title game was decided in OT. This one feels eerily similar. Who wins the fourth-quarter battle?
