Week 7 — Top 5 Showdown
GAME CONTEXT
This is not just another college football game this is history in the making. The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes travel to No. 5 Indiana to face the Hoosiers in Bloomington. Ohio State hasn’t lost to Indiana since 1987 a streak spanning nearly 40 years but this is the best Indiana team in a generation. Both teams enter 6-0. Both teams have legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations. The atmosphere at Memorial Stadium will be electric, sold out, red-clad, and ready to end the most frustrating drought in Big Ten football. Ohio State arrives as the more physically talented team on paper, but the Hoosiers have the quarterback, the scheme, and the home-field advantage that makes this the game of the week across the entire sport.
INJURY & AVAILABILITY REPORT
OHIO STATE: Star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka is listed as questionable with a nagging hamstring injury, he practiced in a limited capacity on Friday and is officially a game-time decision. His absence would be catastrophic for the Buckeye offense, he’s their deep-threat catalyst who opens everything underneath for Marvin Harrison Jr. TreVeyon Henderson (lower body) was a full participant in practice and will start at running back, his explosiveness is essential against an Indiana run defense that hasn’t been tested by a back of his caliber.
INDIANA: The biggest news is excellent news, starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke is fully cleared after missing one game with a sprained ankle. His mobility and pre-snap recognition are what make Indiana’s RPO offense click at an elite level. Without him, the Hoosiers are a good team; with him, they’re a legitimate playoff contender. Defensive end Mason Cobb is playing through a wrist injury, he’ll be limited at the point of attack, which could benefit Ohio State’s physical offensive line. Wide receiver Donovan McCulley is out for the season with a knee injury but has been replaced effectively by CJ Washington.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
– Kurtis Rourke (IU, QB) — The most underrated quarterback in the country. He spreads the ball to 7+ targets, reads defenses pre-snap with NFL poise, and rarely makes the catastrophic mistake. His ankle being fully healthy means he can extend plays — and that’s where he’s most dangerous. He’ll need to be perfect today.
– Will Howard (OSU, QB) — Steady, experienced, and clutch. He doesn’t have Rourke’s mobility but he makes the right decision on nearly every down. He protects the football beautifully — and Indiana’s defense thrives on creating turnovers. If Howard takes care of the ball, Ohio State is nearly impossible to beat.
– TreVeyon Henderson (OSU, RB) — The difference-maker. Indiana’s run defense is stout but not elite — Henderson has the speed to bounce it outside and the power to run it inside. He touches the ball 20+ times and controls the clock in critical stretches.
– Braelon Edwards (IU, RB) — The physical counterweight to Henderson. He doesn’t have the same top-end speed but he wears defenses down. By the 4th quarter, he’s the freshest player on the field. Indiana will ride him to keep Ohio State’s offense off the field.
– Jeremiah Smith (OSU, WR) — True freshman with superstar poise. If Egbuka sits or is limited, Smith becomes Howard’s No. 1 target. He wins at the catch point — exactly what you need in a physical, loud road environment.
– Tyler Merritt (IU, TE) — The safety valve Rourke loves in critical downs. He’s reliable across the middle and difficult for linebackers to cover. Expect several key third-down completions his way today.
BETTING ANALYSIS & PREDICTION
Lines: Ohio State -3.5 / Indiana +3.5 | O/U: 54.5 points
This is a fascinating clash of styles. Ohio State wants to win physically at the line of scrimmage, run Henderson, keep it on schedule, and let Howard manage the game. Indiana wants to create chaos, vary their RPO looks, attack Ohio State’s edges with screens and deep shots to the tight end, and keep the Buckeye defense guessing on every snap. The Egbuka injury report is critical, if he can’t go, Ohio State loses its vertical threat and the entire offense becomes more predictable. Even if he plays at 80%, he’s not the same player who torched Michigan State two weeks ago.
Indiana has the better quarterback, the better game plan, and the 12th man. Ohio State has more raw talent and a championship-caliber running back. In a neutral site, Ohio State wins comfortably. At Memorial Stadium at noon on October 17th? This game goes down to the final drive.
MY PREDICTION: The smart money is on Indiana +3.5. They won’t lose this game by more than a field goal and they have a legitimate shot to win it outright. The Over 54.5 also looks strong both offenses average 34+ points and neither defense has faced an offense as balanced as their opponent today. Expect a 31-28 type score and possibly the biggest upset of the season.
QUESTION: Is THIS the day Indiana finally beats Ohio State? End the 39-year drought? Or do the Buckeyes find a way to win another close one on the road? Who’s your MVP — Rourke or Henderson?
